Indulekha shows how a civilization was constructed on matrilineal principles. This novel expresses the casteism prejudices at the heart of the Nair community and the Nambuthiripad. Romance meets politics and casteism, not necessarily in that order. The tussle and arguments to battle one paradigm over the other was a reflection of the author’s revolutionary mind. Through his fictional work which is this landmark literature romance novel in the Malayalam language, he brought to the forefront the unfairness his Nair community women suffered. Their Marmakkathayam tradition of a polyandrous ‘Sambantham’ was ostracized by British Imperialism in India.
