George Raymond Richard R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His mother was Margaret Brady Martin, and his father was a longshoreman named Raymond Collins Martin. Janet Martin Patten and Darleen Martin Lapinski are his two sisters. Martin went to Marist High School and Mary Jane Donohoe School. He started writing when he was quite young, selling monster stories to other kids in the area for pennies, along with dramatic readings. In high school, he later developed a love for and collection of comic books and started penning stories for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). At the age of 21, Martin made his first professional sale when he sold The Hero to Galaxy, which was published in the February 1971 issue. Then came more sales. In 1970, Martin graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in journalism.
